The Commodores Control the Tide on Metal || Vanderbilt Commodores vs Alabama Crimson Tide

October 5, 2024: The Vanderbilt Commodores welcomed the Alabama Crimson Tide to Nashville for an SEC matchup that few expected to result in fireworks. The #1 team in the nation, Bama was favored by over three touchdowns. But this is college football, and especially in the 2024 season, no team was really safe from a historic upset.

Vandy scored first and had the early 7-0 lead. The Tide looked to answer, but faced a 3rd and 6 nearing the halfway point of the first quarter.

Bama quarterback Jalen Milroe took the snap from the shotgun and went through his reads before firing the ball to Ryan Williams who was settling down in a zone in the Vanderbilt defense. Williams looked to be open for the first down, but it was a trap.

Safety De’Rickey Wright broke on the pass and met Williams just as the ball reached him. The pass was deflected and hung in the air for what seemed like forever before linebacker Randon Fontenette came sprinting toward the ball, snatching it from the air in mid-stride and running untouched to the pylon for a touchdown.

Vanderbilt would go on to complete the unlikely and legendary upset 40-35, never even trailing in the game. The interception was a defining moment of the contest that gave Vanderbilt their first win over Alabama in 40 years and the program’s first win ever over a top-5 ranked team.

“Games like this change your life,” Vandy quarterback Diego Pavia said after the game. The game and Fontenette’s pick six will be part of Vanderbilt lore forever.
