November 30, 2024: In the modern era of the College Football Playoff, style points matter. But always through the storied history of the sport, rivalries matter more. Few rivalries have had so one-sided an outcome as the beatdown of Purdue by Indiana in the 2024 edition of the Old Oaten Bucket showdown.

The Hoosiers served hated Purdue not just the worst loss in the history of the rivalry, but the most lopsided loss in Purdue football history. Quarterback Kurtis Rourke threw six touchdown passes and all together eight different Hoosiers found the endzone as Indiana outgained the Boilermakers 585 yards to just 67.

It wasn’t all offense. Indiana forced five turnovers and held Purdue to 0 of 11 on third down. The Boilermakers gained only five first downs in the entire contest. Purdue defenders tallied two sacks and nine tackles for loss to match their offensive teammates in the domination of the hated cross-state school.

Indiana’s historic regular season ended on the highest of possible notes for a college football program as they set their sights higher. If there was any doubt, this performance guaranteed the Hoosiers their first College Football Playoff berth.
