January 9, 2025: The Orange Bowl was the site of the first semifinal of the 2024-25 College Football Playoff, pitting Notre Dame against Penn State. The game had been a tense affair, with several lead changes, key injuries, turnovers, and huge plays. The biggest play of the game, a 54 yard touchdown pass from Riley Leonard to Jayden Greathouse to tie the contest 24 - 24 had occurred just minutes before.

But now, Penn State had the ball with under a minute to play, with only a field goal needed to win. The Irish had led only for a few minutes in the fourth quarter and the pressure was on to shut down the Nittany Lion offense and play for overtime.

On a 1st and 10 from their 28 yard line, Penn State got aggressive. Quarterback Drew Allar dropped back and drifted to his left, looking for an open man. His first two options were blanketed. As he continued to survey the field, Notre Dame linebacker Jaylen Sneed found a crease in the protection and rocketed toward Allar. Allar had to rush his throw and let go of the ball just as Sneed connected.

The ball was intended for wide receiver Omari Evans, but cornerback Christian Gray was in position to make a play. Stretching out in a flying leap, Gray made the interception and gave the ball back to his offense with just over 30 seconds to play.

The Fighting Irish would kick a field goal with 7 seconds left on the clock and win the game 27 - 24. The victory sent the Irish to the national championship game.
