October 13, 2012: When Stanford and Notre Dame meet, it’s always an emotional battle for these bitter rivals. In 2012 the Irish were trying to halt a losing streak that stood at three games.

The game was a defensive struggle, led by Manti Te’o for Notre Dame. Regulation ended tied at 13 - 13, so the game would have to be decided in overtime. Notre Dame struck first and took the 20 - 13 lead and Stanford was driving to answer.

Stanford had 1st and Goal to go from the 4 yard line. Three successive runs by Stephan Taylor got stuffed by the stout Irish defense, finally leading to a decisive 4th and Goal from the 1 yard line.

It was no secret what Stanford was going to try. Josh Nunes handed the ball off to Stephan Taylor yet again, who followed a fullback and pulling guard on an interior run to the right. Cornerback Bennett Jackson made first contact from behind the play and linebacker Carlo Calabrese beat his man off the block and connected a beat later from the front. Thanks to these players and the rest of the wall of defenders holding firm, Taylor was stopped cold for no gain and the Fighting Irish were victorious.
