December 20, 2024: Notre Dame running back, Jeremiyah Love, takes it to the house 98 yards for the first score of the 12-team College Football Playoff era.

The Fighting Irish hosted the first ever home playoff game on a Friday Night in South Bend. They drew the Indiana Hoosiers in the first round, who were coming off a historic season and ready to upset the Irish and make a run at a championship.

After each team traded interceptions early in the game, the Fighting Irish found themselves backed up against their own goal line. Quarterback Riley Leonard stood in the shotgun four yards deep in his own endzone with running back Jeremiyah Love to his right. The call was a zone read. As Leonard put the ball into Love’s arms, he read the Hoosier linebacker crashing down and handed the ball to his running back.

Love turned upfield immediately and darted through the hole opened by his offensive line. Indiana defensive back D’Angelo Ponds looked to have an angle to stop Love for a short gain, but misjudged the running back’s speed and quickly fell behind. Though he pursued closely, Ponds couldn’t catch Love as he sprinted down the left sideline 98 yards for the score.

Love’s electrifying touchdown run will go down in history as the first ever in the modern era of the College Football Playoff.
