January 9, 2025: The 2024-25 College Football Playoffs had featured few highly competitive games, but from the very beginning, it felt like the Orange Bowl between Penn State and Notre Dame would be different.

Down 10 - 0, the game looked like it might get away from the Fighting Irish when start quarterback Riley Leonard was forced out of the game to undergo concussion protocol. Leonard, the Duke transfer, had been the heart, soul, and most importantly the guts that made the team go all year. How would Notre Dame respond with their leader in the locker room?

Backup quarterback Steve Angeli came in and played well, throwing for 6 of 7 passing for 44 yards and leading the Irish to a field goal as the first half ended, making the game 10 - 3 in favor of the Nittany Lions.

When play resumed, Riley Leonard walked back onto the field to the cheers of a relieved Irish crowd. He promptly marched his offense down the field and personally took it in for the tying score.

From that point on, it was anyone’s game. The Nittany Lions scored 14 unanswered points to take a 24 - 17 lead with under 8 minutes to play. Notre Dame needed and answer, and they had just the man under center to deliver.

On 2nd and 8 from his own 46 yard line, Leonard took the snap with under 5 minutes to play. The pocket around him tightened, but the veteran quarterback saw his chance when wide receiver Jaden Greathouse made a move that made cornerback Cam Miller lose his footing and hit the turf. Leonard hit the wide open Greathouse, who then put another move to juke safety Jaylen Reed out of his shoes. Greathouse walked into the endzone and after the PAT, the score was tied.

The Irish would go on to win 27 - 24 to advance to the national championship game.
