January 20, 2025: The Ohio State University’s football team has a story to tell, but had to be champions to tell it, according to head coach Ryan Day. With a 34 - 23 victory over Notre Dame in Atlanta, the Buckeyes have that chance.

It didn’t come easily. Ohio State led by 24 points midway through the 3rd quarter, but Notre Dame made a late push, getting the game to a deficit of only 8 points. Ohio State had the ball and needed to at least maintain possession long enough to ice the game. The Notre Dame defense, arguably the best in the country, was play its best ball and Ohio State found themselves on the brink of having to give the ball back to Riley Leonard and his resurgent offense.

It was 3rd and 11 from the Ohio State 34 yard line with 2:45 to play. After successive stops on quarterback runs, quarterback Will Howard was going to have to put it in the air to keep the drive going. Veteran play caller and offensive guru Chip Kelly had an ace up his sleeve.

Howard dropped back, but the Irish had dialed up a Zero blitz, sending seven rushers after the quarterback. But this left star freshman wide receiver Jeremiah Smith facing single coverage, and Howard liked his chances. Howard let the ball go and Smith snagged it at the 30 and ran to the Notre Dame 9 yard line. A few plays and a field goal later, the game was over.

Smith’s accolades are too long to list, but include being named First-team All-Big Ten and All-American as a true freshman. His career will undoubtedly be filled with superlatives, but few will come close to closing out Ohio State’s national championship game in 2025.
