January 10, 2025: Some games are just games. Others are about justice and bringing order to the universe. The Cotton Bowl, a semifinal game in the 2024-25 College Football Playoffs, was a case of the latter when the Ohio State Buckeyes faced off against the Texas Longhorns.
The Longhorns, who made the playoffs with no top tier wins and advanced on the easiest path of the field, had homefield advantage at Cowboys Stadium in Dallas. But the Buckeyes were there to continue their playoff dominance.
Ohio State controlled most of the game, but circumstances and good fortune kept the Longhorns in it. This is how with less than four minutes remaining, down 21 - 14, the Longhorns faced 1st and Goal from the OSU 1 yard line.
The dominance of Ohio State at this point can’t be overstated. On first down, running back Jerrick Gibson was stuffed for no gain. On second down, Quintrevion Wisner was dropped for a 7 yard loss. On third down, Quinn Ewers’s pass was deflected by defensive end Jack Sawyer and fell incomplete. Texas now faced 4th and Goal from the 8 yard line with only 2:29 left to play.
Ewers took the shotgun snap and dropped back, then drifted left. The Ohio State secondary had the Longhorn receivers covered. That’s when Jack Sawyer had the defining moment of his football career.
Beating his man off the edge, he swatted Ewers’s arm as he tried to throw, resulting in a sack/fumble. The ball bounced, Sawyer scooped, and jogged 83 yards for the touchdown. The PAT would make it 28 - 14, a score that would prove to be the final.
The world thanks the Ohio State Buckeyes and Jack Sawyer for crushing any hope that the Texas Longhorns had of appearing in another title game.
