December 21, 2024: In the first round of the 2024-25 College Football Playoffs, the Penn State Nittany Lions hosted the SMU Mustangs. The scene was wild at Beaver Stadium as PSU looked to make a run to win the first 12-team college football playoff championship.

Penn State would need to rely on its stout defense to get things going. They proved they were up for the challenge with not one, but two interceptions returned for touchdowns to open the game.

With just over six minutes left in the first quarter, SMU had 2nd and 10 from their own 20 yard line. SMU quarterback Kevin Jennings dropped back to pass, but overthrew his receiver. Linebacker Dominic DeLuca was there to grab the pick and run 23 yards for the touchdown. This would be DeLuca’s first of two picks for the game.

Still down 7 - 0 early in the second quarter, SMU quarterback Kevin Jennings was flushed from the pocket by pressure, rolling to his right. Throwing on the run, he short armed the ball and failed to lift it over linebacker Tony Rojas. Rojas read the quarterback’s eyes and came down with the pick. Rojas juked and cut, breaking four tackles on his way to the endzone for a 59 yard pick six and a 14 - 0 lead.

The two defensive scores were enough for the victory in and of themselves as the mighty Nittany Lions smothered the Mustangs 38 - 10.
