December 21, 2024: In the first round of the 2024-25 College Football Playoffs, the Penn State Nittany Lions hosted the SMU Mustangs. The scene was wild at Beaver Stadium as PSU looked to make a run to win the first 12-team college football playoff championship.

Penn State’s stout defense was in control of the game. Nearly two minutes into the second quarter, SMU was still scoreless and the Nittany Lions held the 7 - 0 lead thanks to a pick six by linebacker Dominic DeLuca. But that defensive domination was about to get an exclamation point.

SMU quarterback Kevin Jennings was flushed from the pocket by pressure, rolling to his right. Throwing on the run, he short armed the ball and failed to lift it over linebacker Tony Rojas. Rojas read the quarterback’s eyes and came down with the pick.

But, the play wasn’t over. Not exactly a speedster at 240 pounds, Rojas juked and cut, breaking two tackles as he rumbled forward. He gained steam as he advanced and broke two more tackles, the SMU offensive players unable to overcome the linebacker’s size. Rojas ultimately found the endzone for a 59 yard pick six and a 14 - 0 lead.

Even if the Penn State offense had never awakened, Rojas’s touchdown would have been enough as the Nittany Lions bowled over SMU, 38 - 10.
