November 7, 1991: Texas A&M linebacker Quentin Coryatt delivered a legendary hit against TCU wide receiver Kyle McPherson at Amon Carter Stadium in Fort Worth, Texas en route to a 44-7 Aggie victory. Known simply as "The Hit," Coryatt's tackle was so powerful that McPherson's feet left the ground and he suffered a broken jaw in two places, leading to his jaw being wired shut for two months. This moment became a defining play for the Texas A&M "Wrecking Crew," a nickname given to the Aggies' formidable defense under head coach R.C. Slocum.
The 1991 season was a standout year for Texas A&M, with the team finishing undefeated in the Southwest Conference and earning a No. 9 ranking in the Associated Press poll. Coryatt's performance that year earned him the SWC Defensive Player of the Year award, and he was named to the All-SWC First Team twice during his career.
Coryatt's career accolades include being named the SWC Newcomer of the Year in 1990, a second-team All-American, and his induction into the Texas A&M Athletic Hall of Fame. He was also the second overall pick in the 1992 NFL Draft, playing for the Indianapolis Colts and Dallas Cowboys.
"The Hit" remains a celebrated moment in Texas A&M football history, symbolizing the aggressive and physical style of play that defined the Wrecking Crew.
