On October 9, 2021, Texas A&M faced No. 1 Alabama in an epic showdown at Kyle Field. The game was a rollercoaster of emotions and saw multiple momentum shifts. Texas A&M got off to a strong start and was up 24-10 in the third quarter when Alabama blocked a punt and returned it for a touchdown to pull to within a score. The air seemed to go out of the raucous home crowd.
But the fight hadn’t gone out of the Aggies. The team’s pregame entrance music, Power, blared across Kyle Field as Alabama lined up to kick off. Texas A&M running back De'Von Achane fielded the kick at the 4 yard line and electrified the crowd with a spectacular 96-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. The play was perfectly executed. Achane weaved untouched through the Alabama kick coverage before bursting into the open field and sprinting to the end zone with his world class speed. This pivotal play instantly shifted the momentum back to the Aggies, giving them a 31-17 lead.
The quick change of fortunes empowered the Aggies to survive a slugfest the rest of the way, ultimately falling behind in the game 38-31 with only 5 minutes to go before tying the game two minutes later and ultimately winning 41-38 on a walk-off field goal by Seth Small.
The thrilling 41-38 victory over the top-ranked Crimson Tide was a landmark moment for Texas A&M that season and Achane’s electrifying kickoff return solidified his legacy wearing maroon and white.
