November 1, 2008: Texas Tech's Michael Crabtree made one of the most unforgettable plays in school history during a thrilling game against the top-ranked Texas Longhorns. The stakes were enormous, as both teams were undefeated and vying for a spot in the national championship, as well as a crucial advantage in the Big 12 title race.
The Red Raiders jumped on top early, but the Longhorns fought back into the game. With just 1:29 left in the game, Texas took a 33-32 lead. Texas Tech's quarterback Graham Harrell then led a methodical drive down the field, setting up the dramatic final moments.
With only eight seconds remaining and Texas Tech at the Texas 28-yard line, Harrell threw a pass to Crabtree on the right sideline. Crabtree caught the ball at around the 6-yard line, managed to break free from a Texas defender, and tight-roped the sideline to reach the end zone for the game-winning touchdown. This stunning play secured a 39-33 victory for the Red Raiders and sent the crowd at Jones AT&T Stadium into a frenzy.
The win had significant implications for the national championship race, as it knocked Texas from its No. 1 ranking and thrust Texas Tech into the national spotlight.
Crabtree remains one of the greatest Red Raiders to ever play the game. He was a two-time Biletnikoff winner, the first to ever receive the honor for the nation’s top wide receiver twice. He was also two-time All Big 12, and two-time unanimous All American.
